Session 1

Every ordinary day in Jesus’ name

Billy Milton - February 29, 2004

The Apostle Paul believed the place to grow close to God is precisely in our EVERYDAY lives.

The heart of spiritual life is to do everything with Jesus, in his name - the way he would do it in our place, knowing he is actually present.

What would living in Jesus’ name look like in your life?

  • Eating breakfast
  • Driving
  • Working
  • Watching TV
  • Worrying
  • Doing ordinary household tasks
  • Shopping
  • Everyday relationships

One Day at a Time

We can only live in Jesus’ name one day at a time.

If I am going to learn to spend an ordinary day with Jesus, it will have to be this day.

It doesn’t mean doing new things.

It means doing things you’re ALREADY doing, but in new ways - in Jesus’ name.

Beginning the Day with Jesus

According to the Old Testament, the day begins …

  1. When the alarm clock goes off.
  2. When the alarm clock goes off for the fifth time because I know I can hit the snooze button four times without actually being late.
  3. When Starbucks opens.
  4. At night.

According to the Old Testament, the day begins AT NIGHT.

Sleep

  • Sleep is an act of TRUST.
  • Sleep is a gift from God.
  • FATIGUE is one of the greatest barriers to prayer and spiritual growth.
  • Get enough sleep
  • Resolve conflicts before going to bed
  • Invite Jesus to be with you when you wake.

Waking Up

  • Renew your INVITATION to Jesus
  • Speak to Jesus about any anxieties or concerns you feel.
  • Acknowledge your DEPENDENCE on Jesus.

Learning to Find God in Each Moment of the Day

  • We need to develop the skill of identifying God’s presence in our lives.
  • Review the Day with God

Reviewing Your Day with God Regularly

You will become aware of recurring negative patterns. This will:

  • cause you to grow tired of your regrets
  • increase your desire to grow and change

You will begin to be awed by God’s presence in the ordinary moments of your life.
