Church makes investment in town’s children & young people

Earlier this month, Kings Road Church welcomed two special additions to its team, in the form of a Children’s Worker and a Youth Worker. Both appointments reflect the church’s goal of making a real difference in the local community, and investing in the children and young people of Berkhamsted. The church provides a number of groups and activities for toddlers to teenagers. The church’s search for the right candidates took it down the road to Enfield for Children’s Worker Kevin Nash, and also all the way to Port Elizabeth, South Africa for Youth Worker Brendyn Mercer!

Commenting on the appointments, Pastor Billy Milton said “We believe there’s a great need in the town to provide wholesome and exciting children and young peoples activities. It was tremendously important to ensure we got the right people for the jobs, and we’re delighted to have Kevin and Brendyn on board.”

Church Elder Ron White agrees, saying “We believe the church should be a key part of the community, and that means listening to the challenges that people we meet and our congregation are facing, and seeing if we can help. We view these two full-time appointments funded by the church as a real investment in the community. We know for example the concerns many working parents have regarding the time between school ‘home-time’ and when they get back from work. We listened, and responded by offering an after school club, as one of a number of activities for children. This club is open to everyone, and provides activities within a positive, stimulating, caring and safe environment. The lack of things for young people to do is also a concern for many. We hope to expand our current activities.

Youth worker Brendyn is excited by the opportunities for working with Berkhamsted’s young people, “Berkhamsted is a million miles away from Port Elizabeth, but the young people in Berko are cool, and I’m already enjoying working with them. Through the groups, young people get to hang out, meet new friends, try new things, have some fun and see what being a Christian is all about. This can involve answering lots of challenging questions which is great!”

The church began in 1870 when a few Christians met in Castle Street with the aim of worshipping together on New Testament lines. In 1874 it moved to its present site in Kings Road, although Sunday services are now held at Bridgewater School in Berkhamsted, due to the need to accommodate a growing congregation.
